Preggo update

Had my "16-week" appointment with the obstetrician today. Good news all around - baby heartbeat was still strong and easy to find (I'm not surprised, since nightskyre thinks he's been able to hear it with an ear up to my belly); I have had textbook weight gain since my last appointment (4 weeks ago); my blood-sugar test came back well within normal ranges; all other vitals they looked at are normal.

Next appointment is at 20 weeks, including an ultrasound!

So, does this mean you aren't a CF carrier?

anitra April 7th, 2008
No, it means that I told them we won't do any elective genetic testing. Since it wouldn't change anything we do until after the baby is born, I can't think of a reason to find out earlier.

They usually need to do an amino to find out if the baby has a genetic condition and that comes with a risk of miscarriage. Its not worth loosing the baby to find out.

Does CF run in your family?

etherial April 7th, 2008
Risk of certain things changes with the age of the mother. If anitra were to be over 30, the benefits of amnio are generally believed to outweigh the risks.

I'm well aware of rick factors with age. Even if the baby was sick I can't see her ever having an abortion, which is what many women use the amnio for. So there is really no benefit to knowing.

Some people do like to plan ahead.

anitra April 7th, 2008
Exactly. I think knowing ahead of time would just make us worry more. None of the risk factors in our two families are high enough to make me worry about it now.
